⚡ Quick Facts
  • Developer: CD Projekt Red
  • Total Sales: 40 Million
  • Milestone: Top 20 best-selling games of all time
  • Included Versions: Base game and Ultimate Edition

As the sixth anniversary of its launch approaches, CD Projekt Red has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has officially reached 40 million copies sold. This milestone places the title firmly within the top 20 best-selling video games in history.

The developer shared the news on social media, thanking players for their support. The 40 million figure represents a significant climb from the previously reported 35 million, confirming that the game’s momentum has continued well beyond its initial, troubled release window.

A Rare Achievement

Entering the top 20 list of all-time best-sellers is a feat achieved by very few titles. Cyberpunk 2077 now sits in that exclusive bracket alongside games such as Payday 2, Hogwarts Legacy, and the original Sonic the Hedgehog. The sales count reflects both the base game and the Ultimate Edition, which includes the Phantom Liberty expansion. Notably, the count does not include individual sales of the expansion.

This performance has allowed the game to surpass several high-profile Nintendo titles, including Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. While some of these legacy titles continue to sell, the steady pace of Cyberpunk 2077 suggests it is likely to maintain its position in the top 20 rankings.

Can It Climb Higher?

The game’s trajectory suggests it could continue to move up the charts. Should sales increase by another three million units, it would overtake the best-selling Call of Duty entries, Black Ops 3 and 2019's Modern Warfare. A further ten million copies would bring it level with the original Overwatch, potentially surpassing Animal Crossing: New Horizons and the original Pokemon titles.

Despite this success, it is unlikely that Cyberpunk 2077 will take the crown as CD Projekt Red’s best-selling game. That distinction remains held by The Witcher 3. With 11 years on the market and a new, sizable expansion still to come, The Witcher 3 continues to maintain a lead in the studio's portfolio that appears difficult to overcome.
