Tencent and Lightspeed have announced PUBG Mobile Light, a new, modular client designed to reduce the storage footprint of the original PUBG Mobile. While the standard version of the game has grown significantly over its eight-year lifespan, this new option aims to lower the barrier for users with limited storage or older hardware without splitting the player base.
Quick Facts
- Pre-registration: Opens August 25, 2026, on Android and iOS.
- Initial Download Size: Approximately 1GB on Android and under 2GB on iOS.
- Compatibility: Uses existing PUBG Mobile accounts, inventory, and cross-play matchmaking.
- Distribution: Future updates for Light will sync with the standard PUBG Mobile release schedule.
How the Modular Client Works
Unlike PUBG Mobile Lite—a standalone version from 2019 that restricted players to specific maps and player counts—PUBG Mobile Light keeps users within the core game ecosystem. Producer Rick Li confirmed that the app launches with the base game, including Erangel, while allowing players to choose which additional assets, such as specific maps, texture packs, or cosmetic resources, to download separately.
This approach mirrors the modular installation style seen in competitors like Call of Duty: Mobile and Free Fire. By moving away from a mandatory, high-capacity initial install, the developers are addressing the growing storage requirements of the standard client, which currently requires 4GB on iOS before any in-game assets are downloaded.
Hardware and Market Context
While Lightspeed has yet to publish final system requirements, the move arrives as rising DRAM and NAND prices have forced some manufacturers to ship budget smartphones with lower storage and memory capacities. By reducing the initial load on a device's processor and storage, the Light client serves as a solution for users on budget-conscious or aging hardware who previously faced difficulties running the full, resource-heavy installation.
The app will be free when it launches later in 2026, providing a way to access the full PUBG Mobile experience without the requirement of a high-capacity device.
