The anniversary festivities follow a summer update that introduced Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y to the game. It also follows a live New York Times Square gathering where more than 1,500 players joined forces in a synchronized raid against Mega Mewtwo Y to recreate the original 2015 launch trailer.
Trainers who participated in the Times Square event on July 9 receive a different Mewtwo with distinct stats and rewards. For all other players, accessing the reward requires finishing the anniversary Timed Research tasks before the clock runs out.
Because the research expires on September 6, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. local time, players cannot let the tasks sit indefinitely in their Special Research tab. Completing the objectives before the deadline secures the max-stat encounter and the Mega Mewtwo Y progression boost.
