When diving into gaming news and exploring the history of major video games, developers occasionally shed light on ambitious mechanics left on the cutting room floor. Former Rockstar Games technical director Obbe Vermeij has revealed that Grand Theft Auto 4 nearly featured a much more complex non-player character system before technical hurdles forced developers to scrap it.

The Cut NPC Life System

According to Vermeij, former Rockstar North boss Leslie Benzies wanted all NPCs in Liberty City to possess individual lives, complete with personal schedules and places to live. Under the planned design, every character would wake up and drive to work each morning.

However, the concept proved too difficult to execute. "We worked towards it for a bit, but it ended up being so problematic. There were so many bugs," Vermeij explained in an interview with Edge Magazine.

Why Developers Dropped the Idea

Vermeij noted that he personally disliked the idea because he felt the deep simulation ultimately "didn't matter" to the player. In his view, a complex daily routine for every background character added little value to the actual experience.

"It wasn't really important that everyone had their own schedule and their own life. I actually think that, psychologically, players are fine with NPCs being a little fake and shallow," Vermeij said.
