With the football world currently locked in the excitement of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a blast from the past has arrived to capitalize on the fever. Soccer Kid Collection, a QUByte Classics release, is now available across modern platforms, bringing the quirky 1993 platformer to a new generation of players.

For those unfamiliar with the original, the game centers on an alien thief named Scab who steals the World Cup trophy. In his haste to escape, the trophy shatters, scattering pieces across the globe. Players take on the role of the titular Soccer Kid, tasked with traveling internationally to recover the fragments and restore the prize.

A Unique Approach to Platforming

What set Soccer Kid apart in the 16-bit era—and what remains its core hook today—is the integration of football mechanics into standard side-scrolling action. Rather than relying on traditional combat or weapon fire, the game forces players to master headers, volleys, bicycle kicks, and precise dribbling to navigate hazards and defeat enemies. It remains a distinct genre mashup that feels just as unconventional on modern hardware as it did over three decades ago.

Modern Upgrades and Preservation

The collection serves as more than just a simple port. QUByte has bundled both the original SNES and MS-DOS versions of the title, allowing players to compare the two distinct 90s releases. To help modernize the experience, the developers have implemented quality-of-life features that were absent in the original releases, most notably the inclusion of save states, which should make the notoriously difficult 90s-era platforming much less punishing.

The package also includes screen filters and aspect ratio options, allowing players to customize the visual presentation to better suit their preferences. Additionally, a historical gallery has been included, featuring original box art, game manuals, and vintage advertisements from the game's initial launch, leaning into the title's status as a preservation project.

Soccer Kid Collection is available now for £8.39. It is currently available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S (with Xbox Play Anywhere support), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
