Overwatch has officially entered a new phase of its 2026 narrative-heavy seasonal structure, and the latest crossover isn't just about flashy skins. Blizzard has partnered with Japanese pop duo YOASOBI to release a new track titled “Orion,” which aims to deepen the connection between the game's lore and its musical identity.

Unlike many previous collaborations that felt detached from the game's story, “Orion” is rooted directly in the Overwatch short story The Fall of a Sparrow. The song explores the complex relationships between Kiriko, Genji, and Hanzo, specifically focusing on the conflict between the Shimada clan and the Shion-led Hashimoto.

⚡ Quick Facts
  • Artist: YOASOBI (Ayase and Ikura)
  • Song Title: “Orion”
  • Source Material: The Fall of a Sparrow short story
  • Included Characters: Kiriko, Genji, Hanzo, Anran, Juno, Mizuki

Capturing Character Perspectives Through Music

YOASOBI—composed of producer Ayase and vocalist Ikura—is known for writing music based on existing narratives. For “Orion,” the duo intentionally shifted perspectives to reflect the characters' internal struggles. Ikura explained that she wanted the song to switch between Kiriko’s personal mindset and an omniscient, bird’s-eye narrator, mirroring the character's journey from a young child in the story's flashback to her current role.

“The song’s title is a reference to the Orion’s Belt constellation,” Ayase said. “We wanted to use the imagery of three stars that appear to be unified, but are actually far away from one another, to illustrate the unity between Kiriko, Genji, and Hanzo.”

Blizzard’s Associate Director of Product Management, Aimee Dennett, noted that the team specifically sought out YOASOBI because of their experience telling complex stories through music. Art Director Dion Rogers added that the collaboration felt like a natural fit because the current season is focused on Japan, and the team wanted a group that aligned with the game's “hopeful and aspirational tone.”

New In-Game Cosmetics and Future Plans

Beyond the music, the collaboration introduces new skins for Kiriko, Hanzo, Genji, Anran, Juno, and Mizuki. While these items focus on the “fashionable side” of the heroes, Rogers emphasized that they allow the team to explore what characters might wear outside of combat. The art style of the skins leans into a j-pop aesthetic, blending the Eastern and Western inspirations that have defined the Overwatch franchise since its 2016 debut.

Looking ahead, Blizzard has indicated that this is part of a broader strategy to highlight diverse cultures through musical partnerships. “We’re always looking for partners that feel like a natural fit for Overwatch, and our Heroes come from all over the world, so there’s no shortage of possibilities,” Rogers said. For YOASOBI, the collaboration serves as a bridge between the Japanese music scene and international storytelling, with the duo expressing interest in further global projects following the upcoming release of an animated music video for “Orion” by A-1 Studio.
