Fans of the 16-bit era have something new to look forward to this summer. Apidya: Special, a complete, ground-up remake of the 1992 Amiga shoot 'em up classic, is officially set to launch on August 25, 2026.
Unlike simple emulated ports, this project has been rebuilt from scratch to bring the insect-themed fantasy shooter to modern platforms. While the game stays true to the spirit of the original, it introduces several optional quality-of-life features, including modernized difficulty settings designed to make the challenging experience more accessible to all generations of players.
Modern Features and Visuals
The developers are offering players flexibility in how they experience the game's visuals. Apidya: Special includes a toggle to switch between a modern HD widescreen view and the original 4:3 home computer presentation. For those seeking a nostalgic aesthetic, the game also packs in optional retro visual effects, such as bloom, scanline simulation, and CRT shaders.
Perhaps most notably for long-time fans, the release includes content that has never been seen by the public: enhanced graphics originally intended for an unreleased console version of the game.
Expanded Content and New Modes
The core gameplay loop has been bolstered with a significant amount of new content. The remake features five diverse worlds—Meadow, Pond, Sewers, Cyber, and Lair—each containing up to five levels. Players will face 20 unique bosses and encounter hidden special stages. To keep the action fresh, there are randomized in-game events, such as a “Night Mode” that introduces entirely new enemy sprites.
One of the biggest additions is the inclusion of an all-new co-op mode. A second player can jump into the action, taking control of a fully featured bee equipped with its own unique set of weapons, allowing for cooperative play through the campaign.
A Legendary Soundtrack Returns
The audio experience, a staple of the original's cult status, is being handled with care. The release comes with an exclusive 2-CD soundtrack composed by Chris Hülsbeck. This collection features the original Amiga recordings alongside new studio versions of the iconic music, preserving the audio identity that defined the 1992 release.
Apidya: Special will be available on PC via Steam on August 25, 2026, with support for Proton and Wine.
