Xbox is deploying a major client bug fix this week to address the lingering technical issues that caused a 20-hour server outage in late July. The update, which addresses failures in license checks and library enumeration, begins rolling out today, August 10, 2026.

What the Fix Addresses

According to Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet, the July 28 outage was triggered by a failure in an external licensing service used for Game Pass content, Home Console sharing, and specific PC scenarios. A secondary bug within the Xbox client software stack compounded this failure, causing cascading issues that prevented users from launching games and accurately viewing their libraries.

Action Required for Players

While the update starts rolling out today, players should be aware of the following timeline:

  • Rollout Start: August 10, 2026
  • Mandatory Date: August 17, 2026

By August 17, all users must have the update installed to continue using these services. Beyond this client-side fix, the Xbox engineering team is currently transitioning ownership of the underlying licensing service to internal teams and hardening infrastructure to prevent similar cascading failures in the future.
