Microsoft has confirmed that users in Australia will soon be required to verify their age to purchase or access games and apps rated 18+ on both Xbox consoles and the Microsoft Store on PC. The change, which takes effect in late August 2026, is part of a broader compliance initiative to meet Australian regulations.
How Verification Works
Microsoft is currently notifying affected users via email and Xbox messages. Depending on the age and status of an individual's account, the verification process may be as simple as confirming an email address. However, for many users, the process will require one of the following methods:
- Government-issued identification, such as a passport or driver's license.
- Credit card verification.
- Facial verification by uploading a selfie.
The company has stated that content already owned by the user will not be affected by these restrictions. Access to new 18+ content will be limited until the verification process is complete.
Industry Context and Data Concerns
This move follows a wave of similar age-verification implementations across the UK and several US states, often framed as measures to protect minors from adult-rated content. While these policies are designed to comply with online safety legislation, they have faced criticism regarding the collection and storage of sensitive user data.
Critics point to previous high-profile data breaches involving identity verification vendors, such as Persona and IDMerit. In instances like the Discord-linked breach involving Persona, users saw government ID images exposed to unauthorized parties. Microsoft has not provided specific details on how it intends to secure the biometric or identity data collected through this new Australian mandate.
