Xbox’s ongoing restructuring continues to impact its studios, with approximately 3,200 jobs cut throughout 2026. While the scope of these layoffs was previously reported as widespread across ZeniMax and Bethesda, it is now clear that the development team behind Fallout 76 has been hit directly.
Several developers have taken to social media to confirm their departure from Bethesda Game Studios, specifically noting their roles within the quest design department. Among those affected is Stephanie Zachariadis, who joined the studio in 2021 after serving as the lead writer for the fan-made project Fallout: London. In a post on LinkedIn, Zachariadis shared the news of her layoff, stating, "After five years, I was just laid off from my job as a quest designer at Bethesda Game Studios."
The departures also include veteran staff. Joshua Moretto, a lead quest designer who spent seven years on the project, confirmed he was among those let go. "I'm proud of my seven years on the project and my time helping to lead quest design for the game," Moretto wrote. "To all my peers in the same boat, my sincere condolences, and to my peers still remaining, good luck."
Associate quest designer Griffin DeClaire, who also had a background in Fallout mod projects, noted the sudden nature of the cuts. DeClaire shared that he had been notified of a raise just days before being informed of his layoff, describing the experience as a source of significant distress.
Community Concerns for the Future of Fallout 76
The loss of multiple team members dedicated to narrative and quest design has sparked immediate concern among the player base. With a large portion of the team responsible for creating new content now gone, many in the community are questioning if the game's established roadmap can proceed as previously planned. Some players have expressed fears that these cuts signal the end of major expansions for the MMO.
This situation bears a resemblance to the current state of The Elder Scrolls Online, which also saw substantial layoffs within its team. Reports indicate that future content for that title is currently being reconsidered, despite stated desires from leadership for a continued focus on the Fallout and Elder Scrolls franchises.
As of now, Xbox has not provided details on how these personnel changes will impact the long-term support for Fallout 76. For players looking for more information on the industry-wide gaming layoffs affecting major publishers, the situation remains a developing story.
