Sony has faced accusations from a Brazilian retailer alleging that the platform holder blocked discount options for Marvel's Wolverine on PlayStation 5.

Local store The Gamer Hut, which operates storefronts inside Shopee, stated that an external request forced it to either ban customers from using discount vouchers on the upcoming action game or cease sales entirely. The retailer chose to end its Shopee pre-sale rather than remove the legitimate platform benefit for consumers.

Quick Facts

  • Game: Marvel's Wolverine
  • Platform: PlayStation 5 (PS5)
  • Involved Retailer: The Gamer Hut (via Shopee)
  • Alternative Retailer: Mercado Livre (where vouchers remain usable)

While the retailer did not explicitly name Sony in its public statement, the incident draws scrutiny amid ongoing industry tensions surrounding digital distribution and hardware pricing control. PlayStation previously announced plans to stop manufacturing physical disc-based console releases by 2028, a move critics argue limits consumer savings by removing used game markets and retailer discounting.

Shopee itself did not implement the requirement, according to the retailer's correspondence. Shoppers looking to secure pre-order copies with voucher support can still utilize alternative Brazilian storefronts such as Mercado Livre, where discount codes remain accepted.
