Modder ButtersTM has shared a new work-in-progress video demonstrating a custom wall combat system for Marvel's Spider-Man 2. The project addresses a long-standing point of comparison for fans of the franchise: the vertical fighting style featured in the 2008 title Spider-Man: Web of Shadows.
Quick Facts
- Game: Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (developed by Insomniac Games, published by Sony Interactive Entertainment)
- New Development: Modder ButtersTM released a WIP video showing vertical wall combat against Kraven's thugs.
- Status: The mod is in early development with planned fixes for camera movement and jittering.
Bringing Wall Combat Back to Spidey
While Insomniac's modern superhero games rely heavily on kinetic, combo-driven brawls, air attacks, and web-slinging, vertical wall combat has remained largely absent from the core formula since Web of Shadows. ButtersTM's project demonstrates how a web-crawler can run up and down the side of a skyscraper while actively engaging enemies in mid-climb.
"I'm making good progress," the creator stated in the description of the YouTube video. "PLEASE keep in mind that this is a WIP. I know it looks jank but I just wanted to show what I was working on. The camera will be better. I'll fix the jittering. Overall it will be more polished."
Potential Impact on Future Encounters
Integrating full wall combat opens distinct possibilities for traversal-heavy arenas and multi-tiered boss fights that sprawl across building facades. While standard street thugs lack the climbing capabilities required to follow the hero up a vertical surface, future factions equipped with magnetic boots, grappling hooks, or similar tech could mirror the vertical dynamics seen in older franchise entries.
For now, ButtersTM's project remains an independent modder endeavor to watch as development continues toward a public release.
