Double Fine, the studio behind the Psychonauts series, has announced it will involve fans in the decision-making process for its next project. Following the studio's return to independence, the developer is launching Amnesia Fortnight 2026, a initiative aimed at determining the studio's path forward.
Quick Facts
- Kickstarter Launch: August 31, 2026
- Development Process: A live game jam will produce four prototypes selected by backers.
- Final Selection: Backers will ultimately vote to choose one of those four prototypes to be developed into a full game.
- Studio Status: The developer is currently operating as an independent team following its departure from Microsoft ownership.
The studio confirmed the move via a livestream on the Kinda Funny Games YouTube channel. The initiative comes shortly after a difficult period for the developer; in late July 2026, the studio confirmed it had laid off 23 employees to ensure the company's survival as an independent entity.
"Our transition to becoming an independent company also means becoming a size that we can sustain," studio lead Tim Schafer stated regarding the recent staff reductions. The upcoming Amnesia Fortnight 2026 campaign is intended to establish the studio's next creative direction with direct community involvement in the selection process.
