Fiona Sperry, the former head of Criterion Games, has announced that Wreckreation 2 is currently in development. The project comes following the 2025 release of the original Wreckreation, which saw the entire development team at Three Fields Entertainment placed on notice of redundancy with no further support from publisher THQ Nordic.
Development and Studio Shift
While the original game was developed by Three Fields Entertainment, the sequel is being handled by a new studio, When Tides Turn. The team is comprised of veterans from Three Fields Entertainment, the UK-based developer previously known for Dangerous Golf and the Burnout-adjacent titles Danger Zone and Dangerous Driving.
According to reports, Wreckreation 2 has been in development for roughly three months. It is currently slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, though no specific launch date has been provided.
Design Changes and Player Impact
The developers are shifting the design philosophy for the sequel, moving away from the large, rural map featured in the first game. Instead, Wreckreation 2 is described as a more compact experience, focusing heavily on urban environments. This shift is intended to bring the game closer in spirit to the arcade-racer style of Burnout Paradise.
For players who engaged with the original, this change may be significant. The 2025 release of Wreckreation received a lukewarm response, with critics noting issues like unpredictable handling, a bland open-world environment, and a repetitive event structure. By pivoting toward a tighter, city-based design, the team at When Tides Turn appears to be addressing criticisms that the predecessor felt more like a collection of user-generated content tools than a cohesive arcade racing experience.
