Toby Fox has provided a development update on Deltarune, confirming that the next installment, Chapter 6, is currently targeting a 2027 release. Following the surprise launch of Chapter 5 earlier this summer, the developer noted that the episodic RPG is now entering its final phase of storytelling.
Moving Toward the Conclusion
Fox characterized Chapter 5 as the final "necessary setup" for the project. Moving forward, the focus shifts entirely to resolving the game's core mysteries rather than "wacky silly adventures."
Regarding the upcoming release, Fox stated that Chapter 6 will be a shorter, more direct experience focused on a specific aspect of the narrative. He acknowledged that while some players may prefer longer chapters, the structure is deliberate. "By the end of Chapter 7 I'm 100% sure you'll understand why I feel confident about the way I'm telling this story," Fox wrote.
Development Status
As of the latest update, the team is finalizing the writing for sequences in the latter third of Chapter 6 and rearranging room structures to fit the current design. Once these adjustments are complete, the team will be able to play a rough draft of the chapter from start to finish. Development will then focus on polishing cutscenes and the chapter's boss encounter.
Quick Facts
- Release Window: Chapter 6 is planned for 2027.
- Release Structure: Chapter 6 will release independently of Chapter 7.
- Content: The final two chapters are dedicated to paying off established story elements.
Players looking for current gameplay additions can find a recent patch for Chapter 5, which introduced "Nicer" and "Meaner" difficulty modes for the Shadow Crystal boss, offering increased rewards for those who choose the higher difficulty setting.
