A Sector Darkly, a 2D space exploration RPG from developer A Paradise Lost Studios, is heading to Windows PC via Steam Early Access in Q4 2026. A native Linux build is also planned to follow.

Quick Facts

  • Platforms: Windows PC first via Steam Early Access, with Linux support planned.
  • Release Window: Q4 2026.
  • Engine: GameMaker Studio 2.
  • Core Premise: Guide a single lost ship and its crew through a live, real-time sector filled with 11 alien races.

Gameplay and Real-Time Mechanics

Unlike grand strategy titles, players do not rule an empire in A Sector Darkly. Instead, you guide a single ship trying to find a path home through unfamiliar space. The game runs its world in real time, keeping miners, trade ships, haulers, troops, and hostile factions constantly on the move so safe routes can change unexpectedly.

Combat takes place in real time from a 2D perspective. Players can trade, mine, fight, hunt for scrap, research new technology, and craft gear. Ship customization relies on side-grades rather than a single definitive build, allowing for multiple play styles supported by drones and small craft that handle mining, damage repair, and wreck hauling.

Linux Support and Technical Details

The developer plans a native Linux version built on GameMaker Studio 2, targeting release alongside or shortly after the Windows debut. However, the studio has not yet shared test results, and support for Steam Deck, Proton, or Vulkan remains unconfirmed. Mod support, a full galaxy editor, and a game editor are part of the long-term plan, though those tools will not be ready at initial launch.

Players can currently add the game to their Steam wishlist. No playable demo has been announced.
