After three decades, the Super Nintendo action RPG Terranigma is officially heading to modern platforms. Developed originally by Quintet and published by Enix in 1995, the cult classic never received a North American release or a modern port until now. Publisher Clear River Games announced that a new version of the game will launch in early 2027.
Quick Facts
- Release Window: Early 2027
- Platforms: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, Switch, Steam, and GOG
- Original Developer: Quintet
- New Publisher: Clear River Games
Preserving the Original While Adding Upgrades
According to the first trailer and Steam page details, the re-release preserves the original game's look, feel, and gameplay. At the same time, the release includes upgrades, tweaks, and bonus features intended to provide an ideal entry point for modern players.
Original artist Kamui Fujiwara noted in the press release a hope that the game's themes of creation, destruction, god, and humanity will resonate with today's audience as a living work rather than a relic.
Overcoming Decades of Rights and Technical Hurdles
While Nintendo published Terranigma in Europe and Australia late in 1996, North American release plans were scrapped following the closure of Enix's US office in late 1995. Because the original PAL release ran at 50Hz rather than the 60Hz standard used in Japan and North America, English-speaking players faced technical hurdles.
Furthermore, fragmented ownership rights between original developer Quintet and modern rights holder Square Enix kept the title from receiving an official port for decades. Fan patches and console mods served as the primary avenues for players to experience the title over the years.
