Square Enix has officially canceled plans to bring Final Fantasy 14 Mobile to global markets. The decision follows the termination of the licensing agreement for the Chinese version of the game, which was developed in partnership with Tencent.
Quick Facts
- Project Status: Permanently canceled for all regions.
- Chinese Version Shutdown: September 30, 2026.
- Cause: Adjustments in business operations and changes in the market environment.
The mobile spin-off began its journey roughly five years ago after a team of fans presented a 100-page proposal to director Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida. While the project saw a release in China last summer, it will not see a wider international launch. Square Enix addressed the cancellation on the game's official website, offering apologies to those who were anticipating a global version.
Termination of the Licensing Agreement
The decision to end the project was reached through negotiations between Square Enix and Tencent. In a statement regarding the closure of the Chinese edition, the companies cited "adjustments in business operations and changes in the market environment" as the primary reasons for the termination of the licensing agreement.
The team behind the mobile port expressed gratitude to the players who participated in the Chinese release, noting that user feedback helped shape the "Mobile Eorzea" experience. However, this engagement was not enough to sustain the project's long-term viability.
A Pattern of Mobile Closures
This cancellation adds to a series of recent shifts for Square Enix’s mobile portfolio. The company previously discontinued the mobile version of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles following unresolved technical issues. Additionally, Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis is also set to shut down after a three-year run.
Despite the end of the mobile project, the core Final Fantasy 14 experience continues to expand on other platforms, with the Evercold expansion arriving early next year and a version of the MMO launching on the Nintendo Switch 2 next month.
