Cloud Imperium Games has announced that Squadron 42, the single-player component of the Star Citizen project, will no longer meet its previously announced 2026 release date. The title is now scheduled to arrive in Q2 2027.

Avoiding the 'Attention Buzz Saw'

In a post on the Roberts Space Industries (RSI) website, game director Chris Roberts explained that the decision was driven by the release of Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 6. While GTA 6 is not launching on PC this November, Roberts noted that the game's release will dominate media coverage and content creator focus, leaving little room for other titles to gain visibility.

"Much like the rest of the industry there is no way I want to launch my spiritual successor to Wing Commander... launching into the attention buzz saw of GTA 6," Roberts said. "We have taken a look at the release windows at the start of 2027, and decided that Q2 provides a better time for Squadron 42 to release."

Impact on Players

For players, this means the wait for the project—which has been in development since 2014—has been extended by several months. While the developer previously aimed for a Q4 2026 release window around the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo (IAE) event, the project will now remain in development through the end of the year.
