Roberts Space Industries has pushed the release of its single-player campaign, Squadron 42, by another six months to avoid launching against Grand Theft Auto 6. The game is now slated to arrive in Q2 2027.
Quick Facts
- Game: Squadron 42 (PC)
- New Release Window: Q2 2027 (at least April 2027)
- Previous Target: Late 2026
- Developer/Publisher: Roberts Space Industries / Chris Roberts
Why Roberts Space Industries Moved the Date
In a new update on the official Roberts Space Industries site, studio boss Chris Roberts explained the reasoning behind the latest postponement. After originally pointing toward a late 2026 arrival, the project has now been shifted to the second quarter of 2027.
Roberts stated that he does not want to launch the spiritual successor to Wing Commander—which has been in development for over a decade—directly into what he described as the "buzzsaw" of Rockstar Games' upcoming title. He noted that even though GTA 6 is not launching on PC this November, media outlets and content creators will focus heavily on it, leaving minimal room for other coverage.
Development History and Current Status
Originally slated for a 2016 launch following its initial crowdfunding campaigns, Squadron 42 is the single-player campaign companion to the open-universe space simulator Star Citizen. Over its prolonged development cycle, the broader fundraising efforts have brought in over a billion dollars from backers. Despite the multi-year delays, Squadron 42 has never released a playable build in any state, and players must now wait until at least April 2027 to see if the new Q2 window holds.
