Sony Interactive has clarified its current publishing and hardware strategy for 2026, signaling a departure from previous efforts to integrate PC gaming into its ecosystem. The company has confirmed that it is moving away from releasing its prestige games on PC, focusing instead on its upcoming console hardware.

Physical Media Remains Central for PlayStation 6

Despite industry shifts toward digital-only distribution, Sony has stated that it intends to carry on with the execution of physical media for the PlayStation 6. This decision reinforces a commitment to disc-based gaming for the next generation of its console hardware.

A Change in Strategy

This approach contrasts with Sony’s historical initiatives. In 1996, the company actively pursued the PC market, utilizing massive advertising campaigns in publications like PC Gamer to promote its library—including titles like WipEout and Twisted Metal—as prestige offerings for computer users. The company at that time operated the publisher Psygnosis as a subsidiary to bolster its PC presence, highlighting features like CD-quality audio and SVGA graphics. Current company policy for 2026 marks a reversal of that multi-platform interest.
