Sony is pressing ahead with a major shift in its business model for video games. During a recent earnings call, CFO Lin Tao announced that the company is cautiously moving forward with plans to stop producing physical discs for PlayStation games starting in January 2028.

"When we think about the future, and we put in a lot of thought and time, and we cautiously considered this, and we came to this conclusion. And we’re going to cautiously move this forward," Tao stated through an interpreter, acknowledging that the company is aware of the backlash surrounding the move.

While the January 2028 discontinuation date for physical media production is confirmed, Sony has not yet detailed how backward compatibility for existing physical libraries will be handled on future hardware iterations, nor has the company outlined specific impacts on retail partnerships.
