Bethesda has released a new update for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition, addressing a long-standing technical issue for handheld players. Patch 1.7.99 resolves a bug that caused the game to crash entirely whenever a player attempted to open the virtual on-screen keyboard on a SteamOS or Steam Deck device.
Quick Facts
- Platform: PC, with specific fixes for SteamOS/Steam Deck.
- Core Fix: Virtual keyboard crash resolved.
- Additional Fixes: Resolved crashes when transforming into a new race and when selecting empty search results in the Creations menu.
- Creations Update: Added support for bundling Creations and updated storefront UI to align with Fallout 4 and Starfield.
Prior to this update, the keyboard-related crash had resulted in the game being labeled as "Unsupported" on the Steam Deck, despite the game otherwise functioning well on the hardware. With this stability fix, the title is now positioned to potentially receive a "Verified" rating from Valve, mirroring the recent resolution of similar issues in Fallout 4.
Creation Kit and Storefront Changes
Beyond stability improvements, the update introduces several changes to how Skyrim handles user-generated content. The Creations menu has been updated to support bundling, and storefront UI now supports new box art dimensions consistent with other Bethesda titles. Additionally, creators in the Verified Creators program now have the option to make their submissions Achievement or Trophy-friendly, though this requires players to start a new game to take advantage of the functionality.
