Game Science has debuted a 15-minute gameplay trailer for Black Myth: Zhong Kui, providing the first extended look at the upcoming action role-playing game. The footage highlights the new protagonist’s movement, elemental combat mechanics, and the fantasy environments inspired by the classic Chinese folktale 'Zhong Kui Banishing Evil.'
Combat and Gameplay Mechanics
The trailer showcases a focus on fluid, realistic swordplay rather than over-the-top movement. Combat encounters feature parry and dodge mechanics, with the protagonist utilizing specific environmental elements to defeat enemies. Notable gameplay details include:
- Elemental Attacks: The protagonist uses fire bombs to ignite enemies and trees, and can imbue their sword with fire or electricity.
- Parry System: The combat features weighty parry animations that deflect attacks based on the angle of incoming strikes.
- Unique Traversal and Interaction: The protagonist is shown riding a tiger-like animal and navigating seaside and forest environments, with one scene featuring a musical interaction with a skeleton band.
- Boss Encounters: The footage depicts a multi-phase boss fight involving a winged humanoid, where the hero relies on a mystery ally and elemental sword strikes to secure victory.
Development Status
While the trailer provides a deep look at the game's mechanics, Game Science has not yet provided a release window or a list of confirmed platforms. The title remains in development following the studio’s success with Black Myth: Wukong, which launched on PC and PlayStation in 2024, followed by an Xbox Series X/S release in August 2025.
According to the developer's initial announcement, Black Myth: Zhong Kui is intended to push the studio’s limits while addressing feedback and flaws from their previous projects.
