Sometimes, you look at a new Riftbound card and think it looks decent. You take a few days off, come back, and realize it’s actually kind of busted. That is exactly what is happening with Helm of Suppression, a new Epic Gear card arriving in the upcoming Vendetta expansion.
Quick Facts
- Expansion: Riftbound Vendetta (Set 4)
- Release Date: July 31, 2026
- Card Type: Epic Gear (Calm/Green)
- Showdown Decks: Shen vs. Zed, priced at $34.99
This Calm (green) card is anything but calm. At its base, it is a four-cost card that requires a recycled Calm rune. When played, it forces enemy spells to cost one extra Energy to cast. For example, a two-Energy spell like Block suddenly requires three Energy to play.
The real danger, however, lies in the Empowered mechanic. When you choose to pay the additional four Energy and recycle another Calm rune, the card evolves. Once Empowered, enemy spells don't just cost one extra Energy—they require you to recycle a Rune of any color to play them at all. Because Empowering is a one-time investment that lasts for the duration of the game, it creates a massive mid-to-late game stranglehold.
Tactical Impact and Meta
While the total cost to play and fully Empower Helm of Suppression hits eight Energy and two Calm runes, the flexibility of the Empower mechanic is key. You can drop the card early to slow down aggressive decks—like the Jinx precon—and then upgrade it when you have the resources to lock out spell-heavy opponents. While mind-heavy decks will feel the pressure most, Chaos and even other Calm decks will likely struggle to maintain tempo against this card.
As far as current Riftbound Gear goes, this appears to be the first card of its kind to force opponents to pay extra costs for spells. It isn't exactly revolutionary in the wider card game landscape, but it is a distinct addition to the Riftbound meta.
