During the Computer Entertainment Developers Conference 2026, character artist Kenji Irie and animator Serina Ohara revealed that the team behind Pragmata nearly gave the game's supporting hero, Diana, a much shorter hairstyle. The decision to keep her iconic, flowing mane was a matter of both technical challenge and creative intent.
According to Irie and Ohara, animating Diana’s hair presented a major hurdle during production. While many games rely on "hair cards"—flat textures that simulate volume without requiring individual strand movement—the team opted for a more demanding approach. To ensure her hair moved naturally, developers animated every strand individually, a process that required managing 430,000 distinct animation points.
The Decision to Scrap the Redesign
The technical overhead grew so significant that the team actively tested a bob cut as a cost-cutting measure. The developers went as far as creating a model to see how the shorter style would look in-game. Ultimately, the team decided against the change, concluding that a longer, wilder hairstyle better fit Diana's personality. They also noted that, given the character's background as someone who has spent her life on the moon, a regular haircut would be unlikely.
This development insight follows the game's strong performance since its April 17, 2026, release. Pragmata has sold over 2.5 million copies across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S/X. Following these sales figures, Capcom has indicated that the chances for a potential sequel are high.
