It is safe to say that Palworld has still got the magic. Two and a half years after it first skyrocketed into the history books with a record-breaking early access launch, the open-world creature collector has officially hit version 1.0. Developer Pocketpair is celebrating a massive return to form, with concurrent user numbers on Steam once again threatening to reach seven digits.
Quick Facts
- Current Peak: 855,525 concurrent players on Steam.
- New Content: 72 additional Pals, bringing the total count to 287.
- Level Cap: Increased from 65 to 80.
- Pricing: Available at a 30% discount ($20.99 / £17.49) until Thursday, July 23.
"I promise I'll try not to just be posting Steam numbers every day, but… really, thank you so much, gamers," Community Manager John 'Bucky' Buckley wrote via social media. While the 855,525 peak doesn't quite match the 2.1 million seen at the game's initial arrival, it is a figure only 13 other games have ever achieved on Valve's platform. For Pocketpair, it serves as an affirmation that players remain invested in the game's substance beyond the initial novelty that surrounded its launch.
Major Gameplay Overhauls and New Features
The 1.0 update is substantial, going well beyond simple bug fixes. Alongside the 72 new Pals, the game introduces a variety of mechanical shifts:
- Awakening and Mutations: New systems designed to help players unlock their Pals' true power and hatch creatures with higher stats and unique passive abilities.
- World Expansion: Players can now explore the floating lands of Sunreach and uncover the secrets of the World Tree through an expanded story.
- Quality of Life: The update includes an overhaul of Wildlife Sanctuaries, improvements to the crafting interface, and smarter behavior for Pals assigned to labor tasks.
- Combat and Gear: A wide range of new weapons and equipment have been added, alongside reworked raids and overhauled partner skills.
The update also introduces in-game voice chat and fresh visual polish, including new animations that aim to give companions more distinct personalities.
Legal Context and Visual Changes
While Pocketpair is focused on the future, the background legislation involving Nintendo continues. The lawsuit is currently rolling on, with the presentation of evidence expected to take place in October. In response to the legal action, the studio previously adjusted features like Pal Spheres and aerial traversal. As part of the 1.0 update, several existing Pals have received slight visual redesigns, though the introduction of new creatures like 'Hoodle' suggests the developer is continuing to lean into its established aesthetic themes.
Despite the ongoing legal situation, the community reception to the full release has been staggering. "Obviously, we had high expectations for 1.0 internally, but this is staggering," Bucky remarked. With the 30% discount running through July 23, it remains to be seen if the player surge will climb even further in the coming weeks.
