The long-awaited 1.0 update for Palworld arrived today, delivering a significant expansion for the hit title. Developer and publisher Pocketpair has introduced 72 new Pals, expanded the game's map with new locations, and increased the level cap for players. However, despite the massive influx of new content, the community has quickly focused on a set of changes that were notably absent from the official patch notes.

Quick Facts

  • Update Version: 1.0
  • Key Additions: 72 new Pals, new map locations, and an increased level cap.
  • Design Changes: At least four existing Pals have been visually reworked.
  • Developer/Publisher: Pocketpair

Eagle-eyed fans were the first to spot the discrepancies. User Rasen on X (formerly Twitter) highlighted that several preexisting creatures have been modified, seemingly to distance their aesthetic from Nintendo’s Pokémon franchise. The most prominent example cited is the Pal known as Verdash, which has been redesigned to appear smaller, moving away from its previous visual resemblance to the Pokémon Cinderace.

While Pocketpair has maintained radio silence on the reasoning behind these modifications, the timing is difficult to ignore. The studio is currently embroiled in a lawsuit with Nintendo, and the changes appear to target creatures that frequently drew comparisons to specific Pokémon. For example, the previous design for Robinquill was widely criticized for its resemblance to Decidueye, a comparison that served as a major point of contention within the community.

Other changes, such as the adjustments to Grintale, were more subtle, focusing on facial features that previously invited comparisons to the Pokémon Perrserker. Despite the clear attempt to move away from these likenesses, the consistency of Pocketpair's design philosophy remains a topic of debate.

Interestingly, the 1.0 update also introduced a new Pal named Hoodle, which some players on ResetEra have pointed out bears a strong resemblance to the protagonist of Astro Bot mixed with the Pokémon Mimikyu. This suggests that while Pocketpair is making efforts to tweak older, more controversial designs, they may not be abandoning the practice of incorporating stylistic cues from other popular gaming properties entirely.

We reached out to Pocketpair for comment regarding the influence behind these altered designs but did not receive a response prior to publication. As of now, the developer has provided no official explanation for why these specific changes were left out of the 1.0 patch notes.
