NVIDIA has officially joined the Linux Vendor Firmware Service (LVFS) as a premier sponsor, according to an announcement made by developer Richard Hughes on August 4, 2026.

Quick Facts

  • New Sponsor: NVIDIA
  • Sponsorship Level: Premier Sponsor (contributing approximately $100,000 USD yearly)
  • Other Premier Sponsors: Dell, HP, and Lenovo
  • Current Milestones: Four OEMs now sponsor LVFS, reaching the project's funding target set last year.

The LVFS project enables hardware vendors to deliver firmware upgrades directly on Linux supported across various distributions. This service eliminates the need for users to hunt for special firmware files on vendor websites or boot into Windows specifically to perform firmware updates.

According to Hughes, the rollout of the NVIDIA DGX Spark firmware using fwupd is progressing well, with daily download numbers continuing to rise. With NVIDIA joining Dell, HP, and Lenovo at the premier sponsor level, the initiative has successfully met its funding target for the year, with additional announcements expected soon.
