Magic: The Gathering The Hobbit Set Details
Wizards of the Coast is expanding its Tolkien adaptations with a dedicated Magic: The Gathering set for The Hobbit, arriving in August 2026. While 2023 brought the deluxe-sized The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth release, this upcoming expansion is a smaller release focused specifically on Bilbo's earlier journey.
The set introduces several mechanically distinct cards for familiar items, offering three new cards for Sting—including an upcoming card named Sting, Bilbo's Sword—and three cards for the One Ring, represented as Gollum's ring under the name My Precious. Alongside these items, the set features a more whimsical tone with dancing bears and trolls turning to stone, drawing comparisons to the talking-animal set Bloomburrow.

New Mechanics and Return of Sagas
The Hobbit set introduces several new gameplay additions alongside returning favorites. The new hone mechanic adds +1/+0 to an equipped creature and appears mostly on dwarf cards. Dwarves also feature the storied condition, which activates when players control three or more artifacts, legendaries, and/or Sagas. For example, Dáin, Lord of the Iron Hills, forces opponents to pay an extra mana for each attacking creature if the storied condition is met.
Meanwhile, the humans of Laketown utilize the recruit mechanic, allowing players to draw and discard a card, creating a 1/1 human soldier if the discarded card is a nonland card. The set also reuses amass for goblin armies, replaces orc terminology with goblins to match the book, includes new adventure cards, and brings back saga cards based on Tolkien's songs like Roll-Roll-Roll-Roll and Burn, Burn, Tree and Fern.
