Square Enix has confirmed that Kingdom Hearts 4 is set for a late 2027 release across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Switch 2. Following the D23 event, the publisher provided new details on gameplay mechanics and party dynamics for the upcoming title.

Playable Characters and Gameplay Mechanics

For the first time in the franchise's history, players will gain direct control over Donald Duck and Goofy. In addition to these party members, developer commentary from co-director Tai Yasue has clarified the mechanics behind the previously teased King Mickey segments.

These sequences feature a puzzle-based design distinct from Sora’s main adventure. Taking place within a magical book, the world shifts into a 2D paper aesthetic. Players must utilize Mickey’s ability to create origami copies of himself to solve environmental puzzles. These variations include:

  • Paper-thin Mickey: Used to navigate through narrow cracks in walls.
  • Paper airplane Mickey: Created by throwing the character to fly through the environment.
  • Size and shape variations: Including giant, tiny, and box-shaped versions of Mickey to interact with the world.

Confirmed World and Media Expansion

The developer also confirmed that a world based on the Pixar film Coco will be included in the game. Beyond the core title, a Kingdom Hearts anime series is currently in development for Disney Plus, with series director Tetsuya Nomura and the Kingdom Hearts 4 development team involved in the project.

What Remains Unknown

While the release window and several core mechanics are now confirmed, Square Enix has not provided a specific day or month for the 2027 launch. Details regarding the full roster of Disney worlds, the complete scope of the Coco-themed area, and the specific narrative connection between the new Kingdom Hearts anime and the game remain undisclosed.
