After a decade-long development journey, the virtual reality sandbox Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades (H3VR) has finally left Steam Early Access. The title, which first arrived on the platform in April 2016, officially hit its 1.0 milestone on July 4, 2026.

For developer Anton Hand, the release marks a significant conclusion to a project that became a staple of the early VR era. In a Steam blog post, Hand noted that he had long wondered if this day would ever arrive, especially as friends routinely checked in to ask when the game would finally hit its full release.

A Decade of Updates

The 1.0 launch represents the 120th update for the title, a testament to the continuous support the project received over the last ten years. This final major update focuses on refining the game's core experience. The flagship "Take & Hold" mode has received a substantial facelift, and players now have access to a new "BBQ Range" scene.

Perhaps the most significant addition for creative players is the new gameplanner system. This tool allows users to wire objects together, providing the freedom to construct custom gadgets, complex scenario moments, and various devices within the game’s physics-based environment.

The Future: H3VR 2

While the original game has reached its final form, the franchise is already looking toward the future. In May 2026, Hand announced Hot Dogs, Horseshoes, & Hand Grenades 2. Unlike the original, which was primarily a sandbox, the sequel is being designed as an immersive sim and extraction shooter with a more linear structure.

The sequel will see players navigating an "endless proc-gen megastructure." Development is being handled by a team of nearly 20 people, with Hand’s studio, Rust Limited, collaborating with Zulubo Productions. Unlike the first title, which relied on PC-tethered SteamVR, the sequel is specifically geared toward the capabilities of the Meta Quest 3, a hardware jump Hand noted was necessary to support the new project’s technical requirements.

Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades remains available on Steam for $19.99, holding an overwhelmingly positive reputation for its realistic firearm interaction and satisfying gunplay. A release date for the sequel has not yet been announced.
