Gyld, the agency behind Sandfall Interactive’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, has secured $1 million in a new funding round led by Kameha Ventures. The investment is earmarked for the wider rollout of Critical Compass, the company’s internal research system used to evaluate game projects.

How Critical Compass Works

Initially built in 2020 as an internal tool to manage Gyld’s own investment risks, Critical Compass has supported over $100 million in funding and publishing outcomes across more than 45 projects. The system uses a library of over 200 analytical pipelines to assess game archetypes, market conditions, and potential risks rather than relying on traditional genre categorization.

According to Gyld, the platform uses AI agents to investigate market and community data, which is then reviewed by human analysts. The agency maintains that the system is strictly for decision support and does not generate creative assets or make final production decisions.

Quick Facts: Critical Compass Rollout

  • Funding: $1 million raised in an oversubscribed round led by Kameha Ventures.
  • Agency Involvement: Gyld utilized the system to evaluate the early prototype of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
  • Previous Usage: The system has been in quiet use at publishers and studios including Sega, Gameloft, and Amplitude Studios.
  • Availability: Critical Compass remains an internal tool for Gyld rather than a self-service software product; studios and investors can commission reports and research engagements from the agency.

The funding arrives during a period of significant contraction within the games industry. Gyld executives noted that the platform is designed to provide specific, evidence-based research to help smaller studios compete for investment. The agency is presenting the system at Gamescom this week.
