The Coalition has detailed the multiplayer structure for Gears of War: E-Day, confirming a shift away from modern live-service mechanics toward a more traditional progression system. The studio describes the approach as a "return to old school," where the vast majority of items are earned through active play rather than purchased through seasonal tracks.

Progression and Monetization

The game will avoid battle passes and "tours of duty" entirely. Instead, players will unlock cosmetics through in-game challenges and the use of Coins, a free currency accumulated by playing matches, leveling up, and earning medals. The studio plans to implement a weekly cap on Coin earnings, though they have stated they are open to adjusting this based on player feedback post-launch.

While the focus is on earning rewards, the game will still feature a premium currency called Iron. This allows players to purchase cosmetic items directly, bypassing the need to grind for Coins. Additionally, The Coalition noted that "partnered items" sold for real money may appear occasionally, though they intend to be selective to ensure such items fit the Gears aesthetic.

Multiplayer Content and Seasons

At launch, Gears of War: E-Day will include 60 unlockable characters split across two factions. The multiplayer experience is divided into two primary formats:

  • Horde Siege (PvE): Cooperative combat against waves of enemies.
  • Versus (PvP): Competitive arena-style play featuring mirrored loadouts.

The studio has committed to five planned seasons of post-launch support. During this period, players can expect free updates for maps, modes, and cosmetics. The Coalition emphasizes that cosmetic designs will prioritize the series' "gritty" and "grounded" tone, with Legendary-tier skins serving as the only items that may lean into more imaginative, non-canon designs.
