Grand Theft Auto 6 continues to cast a massive shadow over the gaming industry, but the leadership behind Gamescom isn't worried about the blockbuster's absence from the convention floor. Speaking to GamesRadar+, Gamescom brand director Stefan Heikhaus acknowledged that games like Grand Theft Auto serve as 'North Stars' for the industry.
Rather than appearing at the German convention, Rockstar Games is directly competing with the event schedule. A GTA 6 Extended Look is set to drop on Netflix the evening before Gamescom kicks off in earnest.
Quick Facts
- Event: Gamescom in Germany
- Rockstar's Presence: GTA 6 will skip the event entirely
- Alternative Reveal: A GTA 6 Extended Look premieres on Netflix the night before the show
- Exhibitor Scale: Gamescom features over 1,600 exhibitors showcasing hundreds of games
Gamescom director Tim Endres noted that it would be ideal if the convention and the Rockstar showcase happened in tandem, but both he and Heikhaus are focusing on the broader scope of the show. Heikhaus pointed out that events like Gamescom allow attendees to experience hundreds or thousands of titles rather than just one.
'Of course, GTA will take some visibility and awareness from the digital Gamescom,' Heikhaus said. 'But I believe that quickly, people will come back to Gamescom once they have seen the GTA content, because there are so many things, so many world premieres, so much new stuff to see, to experience.'
While Grand Theft Auto 6 remains a tentpole release that commands immense industry attention, organizers emphasize that players' focus naturally shifts across the growing indie scene and numerous other studios participating in the exhibition.
