A new major update for Dwarf Fortress is heading to PC this November, bringing procedurally generated magic systems and wild new rules to every generated world. Developed by Bay 12 Games, the update will be available via Steam, itch, and the Humble Store for Windows, Linux, and Steam Deck users.

Quick Facts

  • Release Window: November 2026
  • Platforms: PC (Steam, itch, Humble Store), including Linux and Steam Deck support
  • Developer: Bay 12 Games
  • Core Feature: Game-generated magic systems tied to world myths

Procedurally Generated Magic Systems

The upcoming patch centers on magic, bringing systems built directly from each individual world's myths. Because every magic system is generated by the game, no two worlds will function alike. Magic will shape rituals, skills, workshops, items, the landscape, and introduce strange auras and shifts.

Co-creator Tarn Adams noted that the team has planned this fantasy world maker feature for years. While older worlds shared the same underlying structure, this update changes that baseline by allowing the current build to generate new rites, skills, workshops, lands, and items alongside fresh pixel art and sound.

Supported Platforms and What to Watch

Kitfox Games has released a first teaser for the November update. The source notes availability for Linux, Steam Deck, and Windows via PC storefronts, though specific Proton details were not provided in the announcement. Players on all supported storefronts should watch for final launch notes as November approaches.
