Double Fine Productions has regained the intellectual property and publishing rights for its entire catalog of games released under Microsoft. CEO Tim Schafer confirmed the shift during a recent appearance on Kinda Funny Games, noting that while some digital storefronts may still reflect Microsoft as the owner for a short time, the rights have officially transferred back to the studio.
The move follows a restructuring plan initiated last month, which saw Double Fine and Compulsion Games separate from Xbox. While the transition has secured the studio's independence, it arrived alongside a 25% reduction in the studio's workforce.
Supporting the Studio's Future
According to Schafer, the return of these rights is intended to provide the studio with a longer “runway” as it navigates its next phase of development. He encouraged players to purchase the studio's existing titles, such as Psychonauts 2, Keeper, and Kiln, stating that these sales act as a direct revenue stream for the team.
The studio also provided updates on its immediate plans to supplement its current operations:
- Amnesia Fortnight 2026: A new crowdfunding campaign is live, with a game jam scheduled to begin on August 31 and run through September. Backers will vote on concepts to be prototyped into a final, small-scale game.
- Kiln Updates: The studio is continuing development on the 2026 pottery-based multiplayer game, with plans to introduce new maps and modes alongside a price reduction.
While the studio's specific future projects remain unannounced, the return of its back catalog gives the team control over its existing franchises as it moves forward as an independent entity.
