Ahead of the game's release on September 3, 2026, the developers behind Dawnwalker have detailed how the game’s combat system functions, emphasizing a flexible approach that lets players blend three distinct disciplines: swordmastery, witchcraft, and vampirism.

Combat Mechanics and Character Progression

Players control Coen, whose combat potential is split between day and night cycles. During the day, Coen utilizes sword fundamentals and witchcraft, while his vampiric nature awakens after dark to provide more instinctual, high-risk powers.

Progression is handled through a shared experience system. As Coen earns XP from quests, boss encounters, and exploration, players receive skill points that can be spent on any of the three ability trees. However, simply having the points isn't enough to unlock higher-tier skills; players must also acquire specific knowledge:

  • Swordmastery: Requires finding or purchasing manuals from soldiers, bandits, or fencers to improve precision and offensive combinations.
  • Witchcraft: Requires locating magic manuals in ancient ruins or haunted locations to learn new spells and debuffs.
  • Vampirism: Requires increasing Coen's corruption by feeding on blood to gain access to more powerful, health-draining abilities.

Balancing the Paths

The system is designed to allow for personalized playstyles. Players can focus on one discipline or combine them. For instance, swordmastery focuses on defensive resilience and offensive timing, while witchcraft offers crowd control and damage-over-time effects. Vampiric abilities offer powerful benefits but generally demand a sacrifice, often fueling the player's powers at the cost of health or increased corruption.

Dawnwalker is scheduled for release on PC on September 3, 2026.
