Owners of the Canon EOS 550D—also known as the Rebel T2i—can now play the original Doom on their DSLR cameras. Github user Lauris-nl has released a module for the open-source Magic Lantern firmware that enables the classic shooter to run on the 2010-era camera hardware.

How the Port Functions

The port utilizes the camera's existing interface for gameplay controls. Players use the radial buttons for movement, the "Set" button to fire or select, and the "Menu" button to access the game menu. The developer notes that the camera's image processing hardware is sufficient to run the game at a smooth frame rate.

Quick Facts

  • Compatible Hardware: Canon EOS 550D only (Firmware version 1.0.9).
  • Supported Games: Includes Doom, Doom II, and Final Doom: TNT Evilution.
  • Unsupported Titles: Heretic, Hexen, Strife, and Doom64 do not work with this module.

Important Installation Warnings

The developer explicitly warns users against attempting to install this module on any camera model other than the 550D. Furthermore, users must ensure they are running the Canon 1.0.9 firmware version to avoid potential damage to the camera. To set it up, users must transfer the Magic Lantern 550D.109 build to an SD card, add the custom module, and place compatible Doom .wad files into the designated folder.
