Stadium Mode Development Halted

Blizzard has officially confirmed it will stop adding new heroes and maps to the MOBA-inspired Stadium mode in Overwatch. In a recent blog post, game director Aaron Keller explained that while the team will continue to provide seasonal balance updates, rank resets, and rewards, the developers previously assigned to the mode are moving on to other projects.

The decision follows a sharp decline in popularity for the mode, which initially drew significant interest as an over-the-top variant where players could create item-based builds and modify hero abilities. Despite its strong start, the mode struggled to keep pace with the rest of the game’s rapid hero release schedule. According to the update, Jetpack Cat, introduced in Season 1, was the final hero to be adapted for Stadium.

Player Engagement Data

Keller shared internal data from June 28 to illustrate the current player distribution across the game’s various modes:

  • 5v5 Unranked: 54% of players
  • Stadium (Ranked/Unranked): 3% of players
  • 6v6 Modes: More popular than Stadium

The discrepancy in player counts made it increasingly difficult for the team to justify the effort required to translate new heroes and maps into the Stadium environment, especially while juggling the demands of the main game.

Upcoming 6v6 Experimental Tests

Tucked into the same update, Blizzard announced two upcoming experimental tests for 6v6 gameplay. These tests are intended to gather data on queue times and team composition preferences, though Keller emphasized that they do not necessarily signal a permanent change to the game's core format.

  • Flex Queue Test: Running from July 16 to July 19, this format features a 1-3-2 team composition (one tank, three damage dealers, and two supports). Crucially, a damage dealer can swap to a tank hero at any point during the match to help alleviate queue pressures.
  • Dynamic Queue Test: Scheduled from July 28 to August 3, this test applies the Flex Queue rules only when the matchmaking system fails to locate two tank players, aiming to provide shorter wait times for the broader player base.

While Stadium mode may be winding down, its influence remains visible in the current version of the game. The perks system—which allows players to select two of four ability modifiers during a match—was directly inspired by the Stadium mode and will remain part of the core experience.
