Developer Game Science has released an initial gameplay trailer for Black Myth: Zhong Kui, offering a first look at the multi-platform title targeted for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S/X. While stunning graphics return, the footage indicates a noticeable shift in scale and ambition compared to the studio's debut release, Black Myth: Wukong.
Quick Facts
- Developer: Game Science
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X
- Release Date: TBA (Still years away, with no official launch date announced)
- Protagonist: Zhong Kui, a demon hunter known from Chinese folklore as the "King of Ghosts"
Gameplay and World Design Differences
While Black Myth: Wukong featured sprawling natural environments, skyscraper-sized foes, cloud-riding, and animal transformations, the initial footage for Zhong Kui presents a muddier, more grounded setting. Much of the trailer is set inside a grey, dreary forest with fewer grand architectural landmarks.
However, combat updates are present, highlighted by a new parrying mechanic. The trailer also showcases smaller, character-focused interactions away from traditional boss fights, including fishing, boat-building, and playing a musical instrument alongside a skeleton band.
Developer Philosophy and Narrative Focus
The emphasis on quieter activities and character-driven moments suggests a project prioritizing story and charm over continuous epic spectacle. On the same day the trailer dropped, Game Science founder Feng Ji shared the company's 10 development principles via Weibo. The first principle states that the team strives to create games they want to play themselves rather than chasing consumer trends.
Because Game Science's previous trailers for Wukong proved to be an accurate reflection of the final game, industry observers note that Zhong Kui is likely to deliver a more intimate, narrative-heavy experience when it eventually arrives.
