Bethesda Game Studios director and producer Todd Howard has publicly addressed the recent layoffs impacting the developer, describing the staff cuts as "really tough" for both himself and his colleagues. The reductions, part of a broader series of staff cuts across Microsoft and its subsidiary studios, have resulted in the departure of numerous employees, including 18-year company veterans like concept artist Ray Lederer.
Quick Facts
- Bethesda Game Studios is currently focusing on The Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5.
- Fallout 5 is officially in preproduction.
- Remasters for Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas have been announced.
- Obsidian Entertainment is returning to develop a new entry in the Fallout series.
- Wider ZeniMax studios are shifting focus toward Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein.
Studio Restructuring and Future Focus
The layoffs have hit the ZeniMax family hard, with significant personnel losses also reported at id Software and ZeniMax Online Studios. Speaking to Bloomberg, Howard framed the current period as a difficult transition for the studio, which is currently celebrating its 40th anniversary. Howard noted that while the studio has survived crises before, the current changes are intended to streamline the developer's output toward its most prominent franchises.
This strategic pivot sees Microsoft pushing Bethesda to prioritize its major intellectual properties. While Bethesda Game Studios centers its efforts on The Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5, other ZeniMax-owned teams are being realigned to manage the Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein series.
Fallout and Elder Scrolls Development
Despite the instability caused by the layoffs, Bethesda has provided a roadmap for its most popular role-playing franchises. Beyond the confirmation that Fallout 5 is in preproduction, the studio has confirmed that updated versions of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are in the works. Perhaps most notably, Obsidian Entertainment—the studio behind 2010's Fallout: New Vegas—is officially returning to the franchise for a new project.
Howard acknowledged the personal toll of these events in a discussion with Windows Central, stating that losing colleagues who have worked with the team for decades is "personally very difficult."
Industry Concerns Over Staffing
The announcement of future projects has arrived amidst significant criticism from the gaming community and labor organizations. With thousands of developers across the Xbox ecosystem facing job losses, there is growing concern regarding how diminished development teams will maintain production quality and schedules. Some observers, including representatives from workers' unions, have suggested that the announcement of a large slate of high-profile projects may serve as a distraction from the negative impact of the ongoing layoffs.
