A New Direction for Game Freak
The story follows Emma, a protagonist who wields a zombie-like blight as a superpower. Her hair allows her to create platforms, boost through the air, and strike enemies. She is accompanied by her pet wolf, Koo, who serves as a core component of the game's combat system. While Emma handles the fast-paced melee action, players use a command menu to trigger Koo’s abilities, which function similarly to the ATB system found in Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Director and writer Kota Furushima noted that the game's aesthetic is heavily influenced by a retrofuturist dystopia, drawing inspiration from Blade Runner to depict a world where technological creations have overwhelmed their creators. The narrative also touches on themes of humanity and empathy, mirroring the tone of works like NieR:Automata and the struggle for survival seen in Princess Mononoke.
Combat and Exploration
The gameplay loop centers on a blend of parry-focused action and tactical spellcasting. Emma’s swordplay requires players to read attack patterns, while Koo can be commanded to bind enemies, cast fireballs, or provide vertical traversal points. This dual-character system allows for various playstyles, with skill trees supporting builds that prioritize either Emma’s melee prowess or Koo’s magical utility.
While the game features open regions, it is not a traditional open-world experience. Players are pushed through these environments by the main narrative, with limited opportunities to backtrack once a section is complete. Despite this linear progression, the game offers plenty of depth for those who venture off the beaten path to scavenge for gear and upgrade materials.
In a demo featuring a challenging boss fight against a towering stag, the game's systems for traversal, parrying, and pet-based tactical support all converged. This structure suggests a high degree of polish in its core design, marking Beast of Reincarnation as a significant departure for the studio after years of development as part of an internal incubation effort.
