Autodesk has officially launched 3D Editor + Canvas within Flow Studio, introducing a workflow designed to bridge the gap between precise 3D scene control and generative AI video creation. The update is now available for users of the platform.
New Creative Control Features
The 3D Editor + Canvas integration addresses common limitations in AI filmmaking, where creators typically rely on 2D models that offer less control over composition and performance. By moving the direction process into a 3D environment, users can now manage the following elements before AI handles the final rendering:
- Camera movement and composition: Direct shots in a 3D space rather than using 2D prompts.
- Performance and blocking: Control character placement and animation precisely.
- Scene assembly: Combine characters, assets, and environments, including external AI-generated worlds from tools like World Labs Marble.
Workflow Flexibility
The platform is designed to provide a hybrid approach. Users can choose to stay within the 2D workflow for faster, simpler tasks, or transition into the 3D Editor for high-precision scene construction. Once the 3D scene is established, the Canvas node-based 2D workflow allows creators to iterate and refine the output using image and video models.
Autodesk stated that this release provides the foundation for future updates, which may include expanded integrations with Maya and other Digital Content Creation (DCC) tools, as well as AI-assisted scene construction and agent-driven directing capabilities.
