In an era where gaming laptop prices are climbing to eye-watering levels, the Acer Nitro 18 AI arrives as a tempting proposition. With a launch RRP of £1,749.99 for the RTX 5070 Ti model, it manages to undercut much of the market. However, cutting costs means some compromises, specifically regarding the AMD Ryzen AI 9 365 processor and a baseline of 16GB of RAM. It is a capable machine, but it isn't without its quirks.

Performance and Internal Hardware

The Nitro 18 AI sits in an awkward spot. While the RTX 5070 Ti provides solid graphical power—averaging 38,571 in Fire Strike’s graphics test—the AMD Ryzen AI 9 365 processor tends to hold the system back during CPU-intensive tasks. In our testing, the physics score averaged 15,814, trailing behind competitors equipped with the Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX.

In-game, the results are a mixed bag. At 1080p, you will see over 60fps in titles like Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Total War: Three Kingdoms, though it struggles to maintain that same fluidity in Horizon Zero Dawn: Remastered. Interestingly, the machine performs better at its native 1600p resolution, where it actually manages to overtake the Asus ROG Strix G16 in Cyberpunk 2077 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Design and Build Quality

Acer has opted for a slimline aesthetic that feels more refined than the typical "chunky" 18-inch laptop. While still a heavy device at 3.02kg, its thinner profile and tapered, all-black chassis give it a professional look that hides its gaming credentials well. The vibrant RGB lighting under the keyboard provides a nice contrast to the understated exterior.

The typing experience is a highlight. The full-sized, numpad-toting keyboard is snappy and tactile, offering plenty of travel despite some slight deck flex. Unfortunately, the trackpad doesn't match this quality, feeling somewhat hollow and cheap compared to the rest of the unit. Port placement is also a bit of a nuisance; while rear-mounted ports are great for cable management, the USB-A ports are located on the right side, which can interfere with mouse movement during intense gameplay.

Verdict

If you are desperate for an 18-inch display without spending over £2,000, the Acer Nitro 18 AI is a viable, budget-conscious choice. It delivers a great screen and a satisfying keyboard, and it handles most games with ease. That said, if you can find the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16S AI or the Asus ROG Strix G16 on sale for a similar price, those machines offer better performance headroom. This is a solid, albeit flawed, entry into the large-screen gaming space.
