Unknown Worlds has released the first major overhaul for Subnautica 2 since the ocean survival game hit early access earlier this year. Update 1.1, which launches today, Wednesday, July 8, 2026, prioritizes quality-of-life improvements and addresses one of the most requested features from the community: more effective ways to handle hostile wildlife.
Fending Off Predators Without Lethality
While the developer remains firm that players should not be able to permanently eliminate creatures, the tools available to keep them at bay have received a significant boost. Game Director Anthony Gallegos explained that most creatures now feature flinch animations. Smacking a predator with the survival multitool will trigger a reaction, making it clearer that the player is successfully fending them off before the animal flees.
The Sonic Resonator has also seen a functional change. Striking a creature with the device now causes a distinct stun effect, leaving the target floating downward and providing the player with a clearer window to escape. Beyond combat, the team has worked to reduce “nasty surprises” in blighted regions. Bloom Parasites guarding Angel Combs will now provide clearer visual cues when they shift into an aggressive state, and the game’s voice line prioritization has been adjusted to ensure critical alerts are heard immediately.
Biomod Expansion and Progression Updates
The update introduces several new biolabs across the early game, allowing players to discover and swap out their equipped biomods. Progression has also been refined for the later stages; by using a new scanning tool on creatures, players can unlock additional passive biomod slots, removing the previous restriction of only having one equipped at a time.
Other quality-of-life changes include:
- Data Bank Improvements: Field notes now feature a manual play button rather than playing automatically upon collection.
- PDA Overhaul: The interface has been reorganized with new categorization and a fresh UI.
- Personal Storage: A new chest has been added, specifically designed to keep items separate from shared resources in multiplayer games.
Looking Ahead to Co-op and New Regions
Fans awaiting more social features won't have to wait much longer. According to Gallegos, Subnautica 1.2—the "co-op centric update"—is slated to arrive a few weeks following today's patch. That update will bring proximity voice chat, player trading, reviving mechanics, and new emotes.
The team is also preparing for the "EA2" drop later in 2026, which will introduce a new region home to the Collector Leviathan. Concept art for this area suggests a challenging environment with limited cover and confirms that a new incarnation of the PRAWN Suit is on the way, allowing players to "get stompy" in the upcoming zone.
For those currently playing, the 1.1 update is available now. Gallegos notes that this is just the first of many planned updates, encouraging players to continue providing feedback through official channels.
