Game Freak has announced that the long-standing competitive battle system defining the Pokémon series may see significant changes in future installments. In a recent behind-the-scenes video, battle director Shigeki Morimoto and Pokémon Champions director Kazumasa Iwao noted that the rules used for decades could begin to shift as the franchise moves forward.
Preserving the Classic Experience
The developers acknowledged that altering a system rooted in the series' history, dating back to Red and Green, presents a challenge for long-term players. Morimoto and Iwao stated that simply forcing fans to transition to new, modified battle styles did not feel right. This concern served as the primary motivation for the development of Pokémon Champions, which was designed to carry forward the established battle mechanics indefinitely.
Strategic Shift for Future Entries
While Game Freak intends to continue taking on new challenges with the series, the developers want to ensure that the traditional battle system remains accessible to those who prefer it. By establishing Pokémon Champions as a permanent home for the classic style, the studio aims to balance the evolution of the main series with the needs of its long-time player base.
