The Weird Route: A Quick Overview

Like its predecessor Undertale, Deltarune features an alternate story path often referred to as the “weird route.” While it is an interesting way to experience the narrative, it is not recommended for your first playthrough. The route begins in Chapter 2 and requires specific player actions to maintain, failing which will reset your progress to the normal path.

Starting the Weird Route in Chapter 2

To begin the weird route, wait until Noelle joins your party. Instead of heading to the right as the game suggests, head left. Noelle will protest, but you must ignore her. From this point on, you cannot defeat any enemies through standard means. You must allow Noelle to land the final blow using Ice Shock. If you use any other method to win a fight, you will be kicked off the route.

Follow these critical steps to stay on track:

  • Clear the Alley: Return to the trash alley and freeze all four enemies there.
  • Dating Shoes: When prompted to define your relationship with Noelle, choose "We're something else."
  • Freeze Ring: Keep selecting "Get It" when offered the ring until you successfully obtain it, then equip it to Noelle.
  • Pressure Plates: Noelle will offer to stand on a pressure plate so you can cross; this only happens if you are correctly on the weird route.
  • Encounter Count: Check the dumpster in the bottom-left corner to see how many enemies you still need to freeze. You must meet this quota before moving forward.
  • The Mouse Puzzles: Every time a dialogue option appears during these puzzles, you must choose "Proceed."

After completing the required encounters, obtain the Thorn Ring from the dumpster and equip it to Noelle. This allows her to use the Snow Grave ability. Use this move to defeat Berdly during your encounter. Following this, you will face Spamton NEO alone; use Defend to raise TP and select your allies' faces until Noelle appears to end the fight.

Progressing Through Chapters 3, 4, and 5

Chapter 3 contains minor dialogue differences but follows the standard gameplay path. In Chapter 4, you must intervene when Kris and Noelle speak at Noelle's house. Exit the box and enter the ventilation system. During the conversation, you must select this specific sequence of responses:

  1. "Proceed."
  2. Move heart to Kris.
  3. "Me."
  4. "Because it wasn't a dream."
  5. "I heard."
  6. "It wasn't a coincidence."

In Chapter 5, speak to Noelle at the lake. When she takes your hands, repeatedly select "Proceed" as quickly as possible as the screen turns white. If you are successful, you will receive confirmation that the route continues; if you wake up on a bench, you were too slow and must restart the sequence.
