It is an open-world world, and we are all just living in it. Ever since video games began, the industry has chased the goal of making interactive experiences more lived-in and responsive. Following the influence of titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Elden Ring, we are in the middle of a massive open-world boom. Even with half the year behind us, the 2026 release calendar is packed with significant titles in the genre.
The July and August Lineup
Ubisoft kicks off the second half of the year with Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced on July 9, 2026. Thirteen years after the original, this remake brings the franchise's celebrated naval combat and character development to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC. Fans are watching closely to see if this project might signal a wider trend of remaking earlier titles in the series.
For those looking for something more cooperative, House House is releasing Big Walk on August 4, 2026. Coming to PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and PlayStation 5, this multiplayer-focused adventure prioritizes exploration and communication over the chaos seen in the developers' previous work, Untitled Goose Game.
September's Heavy Hitters
September is arguably the busiest month for the genre, featuring a mix of RPGs, survival titles, and arcade racing:
- The Blood of Dawnwalker (Sept 3): Developed by Rebel Wolves—a studio featuring former Witcher developers—this RPG lets players alternate between human and vampire forms, each with distinct combat styles. It arrives on PC, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 5.
- Valheim (Sept 9): The long-standing survival sandbox is finally exiting early access on PC. The 1.0 launch will include a variety of new content, most notably the Deep North biome.
- RuneScape: Dragonwilds (Sept 15): After spending a year in early access, this survival-focused spin-off of the classic RuneScape franchise is set for its 1.0 launch on PC and PlayStation 5.
- Hot Wheels Infinite Rush (Sept 24): Perhaps the most unique take on the genre, this title features open-world city driving with Hot Wheels playsets as landmarks. Releasing on PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, it promises a track builder and over 150 cars.
Also arriving in September is the global release of Aion 2. While it promises to retain the series' signature flight mechanics, early feedback from soft-launch players has raised concerns regarding its leveling structure and the inclusion of generative AI assets.
The Final Quarter
The biggest title on the horizon is Grand Theft Auto VI, set for release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. With players stepping into the roles of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos in Vice City, expectations are high for a significant cultural impact upon its arrival.
Other notable mentions for the latter half of the year include Aniimo, a free-to-play creature-collecting RPG from Pawprint Studio aiming for a Q3 2026 release on Android, PC, and Xbox Series X/S. Additionally, Cold Symmetry is working on Mortal Shell II, a Soulslike action-RPG that aims to expand upon the combat and possession mechanics of its predecessor. It is currently slated for a 2026 release across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
