New sales data indicates that physical game purchases on PlayStation consoles remain limited to a select group of titles. Mat Piscatella, Senior Director and Video Game Industry Advisor at Circana, reported that only seven games have managed to sell more than 100,000 physical units in the United States year-to-date in 2026.
Physical Sales Trends
The figure accounts for all publishers and every game released across all PlayStation platforms. While the data confirms that seven titles have crossed the 100,000-unit threshold, the specific titles driving these sales were not disclosed. Additionally, the report did not specify how far beyond the 100,000-unit mark any of these individual games have performed.
Piscatella also noted that for the week ending July 11, 2026, only two PlayStation video games sold more than 10,000 physical units in the US.
Regional Context
The scale of physical sales varies significantly by region. Christopher Dring, Game Business Editor-in-Chief and Co-Founder, provided context regarding the UK market, noting that in the week prior to the report, a game only required 1,000 physical sales to reach the number nine spot on the UK retail charts.
This data arrives amidst public discussion regarding the future of physical media. Recent reports have highlighted consumer interest in the availability of physical discs, specifically following a Kotaku article mentioning that PlayStation may stop selling new physical discs for its consoles starting in January 2028.
